Dr Matt, I'm 18 years old, and come from Kansas Is it possible to care about your friends too much? Kaylee
Hi Kaylee: In the negative sense of the word "care" . . . yes, it is possible to "care" too much. This version of negative "care" is also called "obsessing" or "worry"—and it isn't really "care" at all, as we normally think about it in a positive way. In contrast, the richest sense of the word "care" is NOT to be found on a continuum of a little or a lot (or even too much)--instead, it is expressed by either a DO . . . or a DO NOT. This means you don't TRY to care . . . you simply DO care. A Caring that is complete, lacking nothing! The care I'm speaking of is connected and directed by an underlying spiritual spark. In other words, you sense from the core of your soul, the way to "care" for another. And when you express this kind of "care" in compliance with the dictates of your heart, . . . you cannot do "less" or "too much"—you simply DO, and that DOING is just right, . . . perfect. Read what I've written at this page at my website to expand upon this idea of perfect and complete caring. The fullest explanation of what I'm talking about is described in my book, "Changing Your Stripes." Have a happy holiday season!
